Then they went out and fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.” We now fast forward to Mark’s account of the ascension of the Lord. “After He spoke to them, He was taken up into heaven and took His seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.” This creates quite a stark contrast from the fear and uncertainty that the disciples felt on Easter Sunday to witnessing the Lord’s ascension and having the courage to immediately get to work proclaiming God’s Kingdom. Somewhere in between Easter Sunday and the Ascension, the disciples must have come to a new insight as to what it means to be a follower of Christ. During that time our Lord appeared to them several times, they had many opportunities to share their memories of Jesus and the words he spoke to them, and finally, they recognized Him in the breaking of the bread. They began to realize that the Lord was truly with them always and that gave them great courage to go out and be His laborers in the field. They also realized that they were not alone in all of this, but that together, they formed the Church and that the faith they shared in Christ gave them strength. I think this is an important lesson for all of us to remember that we are called to be together in this Church and to work together as we proclaim our faith in the Lord. This Sunday and next week keep our young parishioners in your prayers as some of them will be receiving the great Sacrament of Confirmation and the gifts of the Spirit.
